Belle Isle is an island, south-east of Detroit. Belle Isle is 982-acres or 1.534 square miles. Detroit claimed the island in 1879, which was originally named as Hog Island, but soon changed to Belle Isle. In 1883, Detroit hired Frederick Law Olmsted to design the buildings in Belle Isle. The most notable buildings Olmsted created were the Aquarium and Conservatory. In 1908, Albert Kahn designed the Belle Isle Casino.
